Did you know about COVID-19, HIV and AIDS
COVID-19
COVID-19 is a disease caused by a new strain of coronavirus. 'CO' stands for corona, 'VI' for virus, and 'D' for disease. Formerly, this disease was referred to as '2019 novel coronavirus' or '2019-nCoV.'
How it spread from one person to another
Current evidence suggests that COVID-19 spreads between people through
· Direct, indirect (through contaminated objects or surfaces), or
· Close contact with infected people via mouth and nose secretions.
These include saliva, respiratory secretions or secretion droplets. These are released from the mouth or nose when an infected person coughs, sneezes, speaks or sings, for example. People who are in close contact (within 1 metre) with an infected person can catch COVID-19 when those infectious droplets get into their mouth, nose or eyes.
How to reduce the spread of COVID -19
· It is important to stay at least 1 metre away from others,
· Clean hands frequently,
This is why it is essential to thoroughly clean hands regularly with soap and water or an alcohol-based hand rub product, and to clean surfaces regularly.
· Cover the mouth with a tissue or wearing a fabric mask
· Bent elbow when sneezing or coughing.
Class discussion
1. What are the impacts of COVID-19?
2. Explain at least 5 ways of which COVID-19 spread
3. Explain at least 5 ways of preventing the spread of COVID-19
HIV and AIDs
HIV-This is the Virus which causes AIDS
HIV stand for,
· H-Human
· I-Immunodeficiency
· V-Virus
This virus affects the immune system of human being which make it easily to be invaded by other diseases.
What is AIDS?
AIDS is the late stage of HIV infection that occurs when the body’s immune system is badly damaged because of the virus.
AIDS stands for,
· A-Acquired
· I-Immuno
· D-Deficiency
· S-Syndrome
AIDS is caused by the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). By leading to the destruction and/or functional impairment of cells of the immune system, notably CD4+ T cells, HIV progressively destroys the body's ability to fight infections.
Ways which HIV cab be transmitted
i. Blood transfusion from HIV infected person to uninfected person
ii. Sharing of sharp tools like needle and razor
iii. During pregnant when blood of infected mother get access to the blood of infant
iv. During breast feeding
